Slave Revolution:  Bible Verses referenced in The Confessions of Nat Turner, 1831

 

                 Sources from the time of the revolt often referred to Nat Turner as a preacher and suggested that Turner thought of himself as a man of God—perhaps even as a prophet chosen by God to fulfill a special mission. The words Thomas R. Gray attributed to Turner in his pamphlet The Confessions of Nat Turner included references to various passages from the Old and New Testaments.

                 For instance, in the Confessions, Turner purportedly told Gray that

 

• “having arrived to man’s estate, and hearing the scriptures commented on at meetings, I was struck with that particular passage which says: ‘Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you.’ I reflected much on this passage, and prayed daily for light on this subject—As I was praying one day at my plough, the spirit spoke to me, saying ‘Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you.’” (See Luke 12:31.)

 

• after running away from an overseer, he had returned because “the Spirit appeared to me and said I had my wishes directed to the things of this world, and not to the kingdom of Heaven, and that I should return to the service of my earthly master—‘For he who knoweth his Master’s will, and doeth it not, shall be beaten with many stripes, and thus, have I chastened you.” (See Luke 12:47.)

 

• "And the negroes found fault, and murmurred against me, saying that if they had my sense they would not serve any master in the world." (See Joshua 9:18.)

 

• "And about this time I had a vision—and I saw white spirits and black spirits engaged in battle, and the sun was darkened--the thunder rolled in the Heavens, and blood flowed in streams—and I heard a voice saying, 'Such is your luck, such you are called to see, and let it come rough or smooth, you must surely bare it.'" (See Isaiah 40:4; Luke 3:5.)

 

• "and the Holy Ghost was with me, and said, 'Behold me as I stand in the Heavens'— and I looked and saw the forms of men in different attitudes—and there were lights in the sky to which the children of darkness gave other names than what they really were--for they were the lights of the Saviour's hands, stretched forth from east to west, even as they were extended on the cross on Calvary for the redemption of sinners." (See Isaiah 65.)

 

• “it was plain to me that the Saviour was about to lay down the yoke he had borne for the sins of men, and the great day of judgment was at hand.” (See Matthew 11:20.)

 

• “the Spirit appeared to me again, and said, as the Saviour had been baptized so should we be also—and when the white people would not let us be baptized by the church, we went down into the water together, in the sight of many who reviled us, and were baptized by the Spirit—After this I rejoiced greatly and gave thanks to God.” (See Matthew 5:11.)

 

• “on the 12th of May, 1828, I heard a loud noise in the heavens, and the Spirit instantly appeared to me and said the Serpent was loosened (See Revelation 20.), and Christ had laid down the yoke he had borne for the sins of men (See Galatians 5:1.), and that I should take it on and fight against the Serpent, for the time was fast approaching when the first should be last and the last should be first.” (See Matthew 20:16; Mark 10:31.)

 

• (when Gray asked him whether he did not “find himself mistaken now”), “Was not Christ crucified.” (See Mark 10:32-34.)

 

• “the Spirit that spoke to the prophets in former days” had told him that “on the appearance of the sign (the eclipse of the sun last February) I should arise and prepare myself, and slay my enemies with their own weapons.” (See Ezekiel 9:6; Isaiah 13; Mark 13; Revelation 6.)

 

• “immediately on the sign appearing in the heavens, the seal was removed from my lips.” (See Revelation 6:1-12.)

 

• just before the slaves began the revolt, the seven original rebels had agreed that “until we had armed and equipped ourselves, and gathered sufficient force, neither age nor sex was to be spared.” (See Ezekiel 9:6.)

Revelation 20

1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
