    Petition of Piety Reese, December 29, 1831

     

    To the General Assembly of Virginia,

                      The Petition of Piety Reese of the County of Southampton, respectfully represent that in the late insurrection of the slaves in that county, a negro boy of hers nearly grown, joined the insurgent and was killed subsequently but without the intervention of any legal trial—so that your petitioner will have to sustain the loss of his value unless compensation be provided by law, which is humbly prayed of your honorable body.
